Anjikuni Lake Mystery: Village Vanishes Overnight
On November 26, 1930, a news story called “Village of the Dead” appeared in The Meriden Daily Journal. It caused fear across Canada because it described a strange event: an entire tribe in northern Canada had disappeared without a trace.
This happened near Angikuni Lake, a remote area in northern Canada. About 100 to 150 people lived there, catching fish and hunting to survive. The weather was very harsh, so not many people lived in that region.
One very cold day in November 1930, a hunter named Joe was in the area. After hunting all day, he decided to spend the night with the tribe, as they were known for being friendly to visitors. But as he got close to the village, something seemed wrong. It was completely silent, even though the tribe usually had dogs that would bark when someone came near.
When Joe arrived at the village, he found it empty. There were no people or animals anywhere, but smoke was still coming from the chimneys, which meant the fires had been burning recently. Joe searched the houses and found food left on the stoves, burning. Sewing projects were also left unfinished, as if everyone had left suddenly. The tribe’s dogs were found dead, tied to ropes, with food in front of them, but there was no one to feed them.
Joe even found a freshly dug grave, but there were no other clues. Feeling scared, he went to a telegraph office and told the Royal Canadian Mounted Police what he had seen. The police came to investigate and confirmed everything Joe said. There were no signs of a fight or attack, and no footprints were found in the snow—only Joe’s.
The police searched for the missing people for months but found nothing. The tribe had disappeared eight days before Joe arrived, and their boats were still on the shore, untouched. In the end, the police closed the case without finding any answers.
Years later, in 1984, two writers suggested that aliens might have taken the tribe. They said people had seen strange flying objects near the village. But this theory didn’t have any proof and was mostly rejected.
To this day, no one knows what happened to the people of Angikuni Lake. Their disappearance remains one of Canada’s biggest mysteries.
