Alert! New PANDEMIC is Spreading Across The World | MPOX Virus Explained

A dangerous virus called Mpox is spreading quickly around the world, with cases reported in 116 countries, including India. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that if we don’t control it soon, it could turn into a pandemic. On August 14th, WHO’s Director, Dr. Tedros, announced that this virus, which was only in one African country, is now a global threat.

The Mpox virus had a smaller outbreak in 2022, but now it has become much stronger and more deadly. In just a few months, it has spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to 12 other African countries, Europe, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, and the Philippines. This new variant is believed to be seven times more deadly than Covid-19.

Recently, India’s Prime Minister’s principal secretary, PK Mishra, held an urgent meeting. He asked three big hospitals in Delhi—Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Hospital—to be ready to quarantine people. He also urged other states to prepare their hospitals for this possible outbreak.

Viruses often spend a few years in the human body, mutating and getting stronger before they cause a big outbreak. This happened with Covid-19, and now it might happen with the Mpox virus. In 2022, the Mpox virus had a smaller outbreak that affected 100,000 people globally. Now, it might have reached a tipping point where it could quickly spread worldwide.

Will this virus lead to another global lockdown? How did it spread from one African country to the rest of the world? Is there a vaccine available, or will we face the same challenges as we did with Covid? Let’s look at these questions.

The Mpox virus was first discovered in 1958 when scientists in Denmark were testing polio vaccines on monkeys from Singapore. One monkey showed symptoms of a viral infection, and when scientists tested it, they found a new type of pox virus, which they named Monkey-Pox (Mpox) virus.

The first human case was a 9-year-old child in the DRC, whose family was in close contact with infected monkeys. Sadly, this was just the start. The virus then evolved into two main types: Clade 1 (mostly in the DRC) and Clade 2 (spreading in West African countries).

While Clade 2 has spread more widely, Clade 1 is more dangerous, with a 10% death rate compared to Clade 2’s 1%. Unfortunately, the Mpox variant spreading in 2024 is from Clade 1 and is now moving beyond the DRC into other regions like Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

India could be at risk too. Two years ago, a less dangerous Clade 2 variant infected 25 people in Kerala, leading to one death. If Clade 1 spreads in the same way, the consequences could be worse. Every year, 100,000 people from Africa travel to India, and millions travel between India and the UAE, making it easy for this virus to spread.

Mpox spreads easily through contact with an infected person or contaminated objects. The virus can survive on surfaces for over 15 days, so it’s important to be careful. Symptoms of Mpox include fever, fatigue, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that gets worse over time.

If you think you might have Mpox, it’s important to see a doctor right away. Follow WHO guidelines to prevent spreading the virus: keep good personal hygiene, sanitize frequently touched items, avoid close contact with infected people, and isolate yourself if you’re sick.

There is a vaccine for Mpox called MBFBN, but during the 2022 outbreak, wealthy countries like the USA hoarded most of the doses. Recently, the European Commission and a pharmaceutical company donated 215,000 doses to Africa, but this help came late.

To fight this virus, countries need to work together. India, known as the world’s pharmacy, can help by providing vaccines to those who need them, just as it did during the Covid pandemic. We all need to stay informed, take precautions, and work together to stop the spread of this virus.
